??????Last week, I went to watch the blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians.

I?ve read all three of Kevin Kwan?s books and coming from an immigrant Chinese family from the Philippines, I can relate to the stories.

There are a lot of ?expectations? that immigrant families place on their children. They like their kids adapting to the places they visit but they shouldn?t be too wayward, they can?t be acting too different from the others in the family.

In the movie, Eleanor Young (protagonist Nick Young?s mom) spoke of how the ?girl friend? is not considered ?our people? despite the same ?race? they came from.

She also shared how ?pursuit of happiness? is Very American and is so different from Asians whose core value is responsibility and filial piety.

Although it is predominantly the case, the World is changing and like the rest of the world, millennials in Asia are also starting to focus on their desires more.

There is a big shift in how vocal Asian millennials are becoming with their ambitions, with their frustrations and with their passions.

?You?re Crazy!? is the first reaction parents of this millennials say upon hearing their ?big dreams?

And then the ?Do you think money just falls on your lap? Why don?t you get a normal job? follows.

As someone who?s been mocked and called Crazy for being extremely ambitious and being such a misfit, I can tell you that I?ve dealt with similar statements from my own family.

Yet time and time again, I?ve never regretted my decision and I pretty much swayed them to my way of thinking.

I?ve decided to have a feel rich attitude to everything even though my mother still feels scared about spending money because having a millionaire mindset makes me able to transcend faster to the next level. And as cherry on top, it?s financially rewarding as well.

The first impression people have of me is someone who was born and raised in the West because of how comfortable I am of my skin.

Though I did a stint in New Zealand almost a decade ago, I?m 100% Asian ? and I?m proud of my heritage.

Our ancestry makes us who we are today. But it is upon us to take the best pieces of that heritage and update that into what suits us the best for us to live our purpose:

For me, good work ethic, sound reasoning and practicality are the things I took from my heritage. The sense of individualism, my vocal reasoning and my forward thinking nature are what I got from the western influences.

Be proud of who you are. Accept both your strengths and weaknesses. Develop what needs to balance our your weaknesses.
