I was born “unlucky”.
At least that’s what my culture says about my birthmark.
So despite being born with a silver spoon, coming from generations of entrepreneurs and growing up with the wealthy, I held the belief that things would come very very hard for me, and even then, I couldn’t relax or I’d lose everything.
That was exactly what happened in the Asian Financial Crisis in the 90s.
We lost everything - the money, the assets, the status, the influence and connections.
I was in my pre-teens. And I internalized everything as my fault, for being born with the unlucky birthmark.
To make up for it, I worked and worked and worked and worked to help lighten the load for my parents, and keep up with my rich classmates.
When my friends were busy talking about the latest Westlife concert or their latest crush, I was busy making deals and making money.
In my mid 20s, I became so depressed I wanted to end my life. Everything looked so great on the surface, but I was empty inside. I could afford anything I wanted because I worked harder than anyone I knew, and made more money than my peers. Nothing was given to me. Nothing was effortless. Because “I’m unlucky”
One day I decided I’m done with being unlucky.
From then on, I’d be lucky. That night, I was at a gala buying raffle tickets to support the cause, but this time, I decided I’d win. And I did. That made me more curious about how things can be effortless, and I started unlearning habits that kept me apologetic for my birthmark.
It’s been 15 years since I decided to no longer be that unlucky girl.
